The Mystery of Anxiety

The mystery of anxiety arises because we do not understand its nature, cause, function, purpose, meaning or cure. The reason for this obscurity is because we are not willing to participate fully in the experience of anxiety. We prefer to stand outside of it and treat it like an irrelevant stranger and intrusive enemy. However, what we throw out the back door comes hack in the front. When we assume
the posture of being an outsider to anxiety, we become its victim. What we reject, rejects us. What we distance ourselves from, distances us. What we ignore, makes us ignorant.

I am exploring the proposal that anxiety is the most universal, most misunderstood, most avoided, most maligned, most mysterious and most hopeful of all human experiences outside of the conscious choice to pursue enlightenment. Anxiety is a mystery because its nature, cause, function, purpose, meaning and cure is directed related to self-unawareness. Anxiety is a mystery because generally we are not conscious of our desires for enlightenment nor of our enlightenment potential. The true meaning of anxiety has escaped our notice for the most part in human history except in bits and pieces, fits and starts. It is my sincere hope that this work we are doing together will open the door to this mystery, but I do not expect that anxiety will ever become objective, package-able, sale-able knowledge, any more than human nature itself.

Although I have acquainted myself with the assumptions about anxiety in the literature of science, philosophy, phenomenology, psychology, medicine, psychiatry and religion, I will not go into depth about those findings, as that would take a whole volume in itself. However, this current work is a direct friendly challenge to most of those assumptions and conclusions about anxiety and its treatment.

Join me in this continuing exploration and adventure into the unknown of you and I. You will probably find, as I have, that the mystery of anxiety is as strangely awesome as God. It is my experience that you cannot separate the experience of anxiety and God-consciousness from each other. The inquiry into the nature of anxiety takes you into the very depths of yourself and consciousness. We have always been searching for something beyond our current level of knowledge, experience and accomplishment, but we did not expect anxiety to be the door to that journey. I dare you to get to know yourself by facing your lack of knowledge about yourself by consciously entering the mystery of your anxiety.

John: I did something stupid today. Because?
I made threats to my wife today. Because?
My wife doesn’t trust me. Because?
I am under a restraining order. Because?
My wife is threatening to divorce me. Because?
I saw my wife on the street today and my heart jumped. Because?
I can’t sleep. Because?
I am suspicious that my wife is seeing someone else, Because?
I guess I have lost her. Because?
My wife doesn’t want me to see our two girls. Because?
My wife constantly calls me a liar. Because?

All of these comments and questions were made during an interview with John following an upsetting day with his wife after their recent separation. All of these questions have the same answer. Can you guess what that is? Write me an email and give me your feedback, and I will tell you what I think the answer is.

The Real Human

If the Divine Father is spirit and the Divine Mother is earth ( or matter), then what is the product (child) of their union? Who is the child born of the union of spirit and matter if it is not the Human. We have not known the truly Human because we did not know the Father and the Mother, nor of their union. The only commandment with promise is that if we honor our Father and Mother, we shall live long upon the earth. We did not know what this promise really meant, did we? You are a child or incarnation of this union of spirit and matter. You cannot separate yourself from the union of spirit and matter, for that is what you are. Our job here is to know and live this union, i.e., to be Human. But so far we have only known and been the inhuman or semi-human or a false copy of the human. The ego human is not the real human. Thank God!

If you were a prince or princess and didn’t know it, how could you claim the values and qualities of the King and Queen? Can you sing with the old hymn “I’m a child of the King” and know the empowerment of that claim? No one is parent-less. No one is father-less or mother-less. You just have to shift your awareness. On the physical level, you may not be able to see your Divine Parents right this minute. But on your spiritual level, you can become aware of and honor their presence right now.

The Divine Father lives in your left hemisphere brain and the Divine Mother lives in your right hemisphere brain. Their union produces a child, which is your third eye, your spiritual self-awareness. Your two eyes see the planet-side finite world; your single or third eye sees the holographic infinite world. Your two eyes are visible and see the visible; your third eye is invisible and sees the invisible. To become fully and truly human you have to use both. You have never been separated from your Divine Father-Mother Source any more than from your two-hemisphere brain.

For some interesting reading on the brain, see: http://www.singsurf.org/brain/rightbrain.html

Taking cues from 19th-century English physician Arthur Wigan (whose seemingly normal friend, it turned out when autopsied, had only a single brain hemisphere), contemporary neuroscience asks whether normal people, who possess both left and right brains, can be said to be literally of two minds. Schiffer, an associate attending psychiatrist at McLean Hospital and a Harvard Medical School psychiatry instructor, believes the answer is a resounding yes, and argues that psychiatric disorders are best understood as the unhappy result of two warring brain halves

A psychiatrist affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Schiffer has studied split-brain research and devised his own experiments to show that stress and anxiety are often felt more strongly in one hemisphere than the other. No simple "left brain good, right brain bad" dichotomy, it seems that those who have been affected by emotional trauma lateralize the effects, perhaps in an effort to maintain more-or-less-normal functioning. One hemisphere or the other gets stuck in the past, says Schiffer, and acts out through the patient's symptoms.

"For energy to flow through a battery, it must have a positive and a negative charge—or we could say active and receptive. This same principle is true for our lives as well. We must be firmly grounded in the world of form (receptive/negative) as well as in the world of spirit (active/positive). If one of them is missing, energy cannot flow—now that makes sense, doesn't it?" James Ray

There you have it, Divine Father and Divine Mother principles, just as in a battery. And what is the result of this union? The Human Energy! You!

Self-Mastery (Part Two)

There is a gap between being a slave and being a master. That gap we call existential anxiety. If you want to be enlightened, you have to be willing to live there in that gap. That gap is the enlightenment process. It is the distance between what you think you are and what you are. You think you are an ego, but you are the Self. Awareness of this difference is existential anxiety. Until you embrace that gap, you will only experience symptomatic anxiety and its self-medicating behavior. Once you step out of that repetitious cycle, and into the gap, you begin to awaken. Anxiety is your friend. Anxiety prompts you to more awareness if you are listening. Anxiety tells you when you are playing slave again. Anxiety tells you that masterhood is calling you. The slave mentality wants to keep other people down so you don’t feel so bad and so alone. The master mentality is grateful for everyone’s advancement. As your team is lifted up, so are you.

In the gap, you will notice certain things. (1) You are making a fundamental change in perception. The old way is passing, something new is being born. (2) When an old pattern passes, and before the new can be born, there is a gap. There is a neutral place. There is what appears to be a void or a vacuum. (3) You can choose to be patient in that gap. You can choose to be expectant in that desert-like experience. You can choose to “wait upon the Lord” in that space.
That desert-like place is the place of unburdening, letting go of the old. Once you begin to unburden, you will rise. (4) You will notice that as this de-toxification takes place, you will rise. You will rise to a new level of vibration, a new frequency. Jung called it the journey of individuation. The scripture calls it the Promised Land. We are calling it masterhood. (6) In this new frequency, you will attract new people, new experiences. At each new level of mastership, you do not attract the same old samo. Like attracts like. Just let go of the old familiar frequency, and you will rise to a new level. St Paul spoke of the “seventh heaven” experience. The Buddhists say there are 33 levels. Who knows how many levels there are! But you are moving from slavery to mastery. Your Teacher is providing you with that uplifting energy, and you are learning new things every minute, every hour, every day. And your world is expanding at an unprecedented pace. Everyone that you forgive, you uplift, and everyone that you forgive and uplift, uplifts you.

In this self-mastery process you are un-learning and learning. You expect to live in the unknown, moment by moment. The unknown is your friend. When you flow with the process, you do not experience anxiety. When you resist the process, anxiety will arise. You don’t need to control this process. You don’t even know how to control it, and if you did you would make too many mistakes and get too anxious. Only the slave (ego) tries to control. Only the ego is that fearful. The master trusts and flows. If you are here to serve the planet, you don’t have to fear. Slaves don’t really serve, masters do. Slaves appear to serve, but it is not a loving service. It is a fearful service in which control issues cloud one’s perception.
